"Get over your FEAR of flipping "

It can be scary learning to flip for the first time, But it's necessary if you want to be a good cheerleader. Especially for fliers in college who need to flip in pyramids, stunts, baskets, transitions, and tumbling. Here are 4 tips to help:

  • Repetition - Do the skill in repitition. Even with a spot, repetition will give you a better feel for the skill and more confidence. Try doing the skill over and over again, especially with tumbling. Eventually it will become 2nd nature to you.
  • Technique - Get your technique down to alleviate your frustrations. By working on such things as keeping a tight tuck, jumping off of the ground, and riding will help you hit the skill, and this will give you more confidence.
  • Stregnth - Do exercises to increase your skills for the flip. For jumping do plyometrics, for tucking do tucks on the ground or quick sit ups, and for holding yourself up in pyramid during a flip you should do dips. Gain stregnth and explosive power so that the flip skill will be easier to do and you will become more comfortable with the flip.
  • Understanding - Understand what makes the flip skill go around. If you open up early, then that will stop your rotation, if you don't ride up then you will not go as high. Understand how the flip skill works, and then it will become easier to execute to help you over your FEAR of flipping.
