"Tips for NEW bases"

Cheerwiz.com

If you are a NEW base, then here are some GREAT starting tips to help you in all areas of cheerleading:

1.) Firm Grip - Make sure you have a firm grip on the flier's foot. It will make them feel more comfortable in the stunt and/or pyramid.
2.) Safety - Understand that the flier does not touch the ground in any circumstance. Know that she must come down feet first, and that you need to get in close and catch high to make the landing as comfortable as possible.
3.) Solid - Try to keep all movements underneath as subtle as possible. If you are moving around to much under the stunt, this will cause the flier to be more uncomfortable.
4.) Use your legs - When lifting the flier, try to use more of your legs in the stunt/pyramid/basket and less of your arms/back.
5.) Soft catch - Make sure you always reach high, jump, catch high, bring the flier into your body, and absorb the cradle with your legs. This will give the flier a softer landing.
6.) Momentum - Using the momentum of the flier will allow you to not use as much energy. So when the flier jumps into your stunt/basket, then you need to allow her to jump and not lift her too soon.
7.) Timing - Make sure you have perfect timing with your other bases and flier. This is done by NOT hesitating, watching those around you, and feeling your way into the stunt/pyramid/basket.
8.) Loose baskets - For basket tosses, make sure your grip is nice and loose. This will allow more movement and flexibility in the throw which will make the toss higher.
9.) Finish your flick (COED) - When you toss your flier make sure you finish your flick. This is the extending of your hands as you toss the flier up in the air. Your hands should be left pointing upword if done correctly.
10.) Solid shouler stands - One of the key elements in pyramids is the shoulder stand. Make sure you are pulling down on the flier's calves and squeezing them into you in order to give the flier the desired support that she/he needs.
