"Go from JV to Varsity"

Cheerwiz.com

Most High School and College Teams have a JV and a Varsity Team.  For some teams Varsity and JV is determined according to your age.  On other teams it's determined by your skill.  For those teams that it is determined by skills, here are a few tips to help you make it to Varsity.

Attitude - Have a positive attitude as much as possible.  Cheerleading is a Team sport and by being able to work with other individuals is a plus. The coach will notice in time and this will work in your favor.

Ask Questions - Always ask your coach questions.  Even if you have to stay after practice or drop by their office, you will get any and all answers to helping you improve your cheerleading skills.  This will also give you a better feel of where you stand on the squad and make you stand out just a bit more than before.

Practice when there's NO practice - Stay after practice, go to open gyms, OR go as a group out for an open practice.  All of theses are ways to improve your cheerleading skills and show that you are dedicated to the team and learning more.  Please make sure that you have either a proper coach, instructor, and/or spotter on hand for safety reasons.

Improve your Tumbling - Tumbling is one of those skills that takes time to learn, and can really add value to you as a cheerleaders once you have learned it.  The best way to improve your tumbling on the outside safely is to sign up for tumbling classes in a gymnastics/cheerleading gym.

Improve your Stunting - Of course practicing when there's NO practice will help. The other ways is to continue stunting when no one else is, sign up for a stunting camp, visit college cheer squads, become an instructor, and watch video tapes/DVDs for pointers.

Improve your baskets - Take advantage of others NOT wanting to do baskets.  This goes for both fliers and bases.  Baskets can be strenuous and repetitive.  Most cheerleaders get burned out when it comes to baskets.  Continue throwing OR jumping in will not only improve your basket skills, but will also show the coach how much of a good worker you are.
