"8 tips to run practice more efficiently!”
Cheerleading squads are usually limited to practice time, so here are some tips to take advantage of the time you have:
.) Stretching - Stretch as a team and make sure the squad stays within the allotted time frame. 15 minutes is good but taking over 30 minutes is wasting your time!
.) Tumbling - Line the entire team up and have them do a tumbling skill all together. For example do squad backhandprings together on the same count about 5 times. Then on count have those who do not have the skill attempt it with a spot about 5 times. The switch from the ones who have it to the ones who don't is enough time for a breather.
.) Stunting - Separate the team into 2 groups. Line up group one and call out stunts one after the next. Take turns between each group to give them a breather.
.) Pyramids - Do this at the end of practice. Make sure you preplan people in their places beforehand for new pyramids. For old pyramids, call out one after the next and NO talking in between. Have those who are not in the pyramid placed as extra spotters and NO one should be sitting down.
.) Time management - Make sure you place a dedicated amount of time for each skill and don't go over your time. If you don't watch the clock, then practice will be over before you know it.
.) Discussions - keep them minimal. Coach and cheerleaders need to keep this time minimal. Any personal questions should be asked at the end of practice, and coaches should keep agenda items as little as possible so that you do not lose their attention.
.) Attendance - Even if 1 person is late, it can make a BIG difference in practice and what you can get accomplished. Make sure you enforce tardiness!
.) Baskets - Rotate your fliers through and keep talking amongst the bases and fliers minimal. Make sure those not involved in the basket are working on their tumbling, stunts, and/or basket technique while they are waiting. NO one should be sitting.
